Our Special Collections feature resources on a range of topic and subjects. They have been especially chosen to entertain but also to support our readers.

These resources are free to borrow for all members of Western Isles Libraries. They can be borrowed from any of our libraries but also requested through our online catalogue. Use your library log in.

Climate Collection

The best way to find out more about the climate crisis and what we can all do to help mitigate the impact on the planet and adapt to a new way of living is through reading.

We have created two fantastic collections of books about climate and lots of different topics, to help you find out more:

Climate Collection – Children

These are books for children. The collection comprises picture books to share with toddlers and pre-schoolers as well as junior books for young readers and young adult readers. It’s a mix of information books as well as stories of adventures in nature and daring animal rescues.
These books display a light green sticker on the spine.

Climate Collection – Adults

Through this collection, we aim to inspire public engagement and positive action in the Western Isles.

PRIDE

We champion access to books that celebrate what makes us unique and proud to be ourselves. Pride is a collection of LGBTQIA+ books which explore love, compassion, identity, curiosity, and the beauty of our differences.

These are books that present LGBTQIA+ and non-traditional families and stories, some of which explore people's experiences and identities, as well as queer history. These also comprise information books highlighting the journey of individuals and the larger movement for love, acceptance and equality for all.

We have two collections; one for young adults, and one for adults.

OH!CON

Our OH!CON collection was started as part of the first Hebridean comicon (OH!CON) , held in October 2022.

A comicon is a convention (con, for short) focused on comic books and related forms of pop culture entertainment, including movies, TV shows, and video games.

This collection of books celebrates that comics, sci-fi and geek pop culture fandom.

Out of This World Collection

To all of you fantasy and science-fiction lovers, we have books for you!

Out of this world is a collection of fantasy and sci-fi for young adult and adult readers. Some titles are classics, others are new and sometimes obscure titles and that’s the way we like it! These books display a dark blue sticker on the spine.
